STEM at Home

Welcome to STEAM at Home by STEM In The Rockaways! Designed for families and young learners, this resource hub makes science, technology, engineering, arts, and math engaging and accessible right from your living room. Whether you're looking for quick hands-on activities, real kit and tool recommendations used in community programs, or thoughtful STEAM gift ideas for birthdays and holidays, you'll find everything you need to spark curiosity and keep kids building, coding, and discovering year-round.

For families

Help your young learner explore STEAM at home

Simple activities you can do together, plus the kits and supplies we use in our programs — with gift ideas for the holidays, birthdays and every season.

Try it at home

Step-by-step STEAM activities

Each one takes about 30 minutes, uses a few supplies, and ends with a question to talk through together.

EngineeringGrades 2–8

Light-up paper circuit card

You'll need: copper foil tape, a 5mm LED, a CR2032 coin battery, cardstock, clear tape

  1. Draw two lines on the card that almost meet — one for + and one for –.
  2. Lay copper tape along each line, leaving a small gap.
  3. Spread the LED legs and tape the longer leg to the + line and the shorter leg to the – line.
  4. Fold a corner over the coin battery so pressing it closes the circuit and the LED lights.

Talk about it: What happens if you flip the battery over? Why?

ScienceGrades K–5

Yeast balloon blow-up

You'll need: a packet of dry yeast, warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, a small bottle, a balloon, a funnel

  1. Use the funnel to pour the yeast, sugar and warm water into the bottle.
  2. Stretch the balloon over the bottle's mouth.
  3. Set it somewhere warm and check every 10 minutes.
  4. Measure how big the balloon gets and draw what you see.

Talk about it: Where do you think the gas filling the balloon comes from?

MathGrades 3–8

Tower of Hanoi challenge

You'll need: a Tower of Hanoi puzzle (or 3–5 coins of different sizes and 3 paper plates)

  1. Stack the pieces on the first peg, largest on the bottom.
  2. Move the whole stack to the last peg, one piece at a time.
  3. A bigger piece can never sit on a smaller one.
  4. Count your moves, then try again with one more piece.

Talk about it: Can you find a pattern in the fewest moves for 3, 4 and 5 pieces?
